Kanga Rocks - Celebrating Reigate
Find My Reigate exists to bring families closer to the fantastic community on our doorstep. Our 'Celebrating Reigate' series looks to put the spotlight on the individuals, businesses and locations that makes our corner of Surrey such a great place to be.
Self care is so important, but sometimes it can be difficult to balance our needs with those of our little ones. When Michelle Harris couldn't find the right activity that she could enjoy with her baby, she set up her own! She tells us about dancing with your baby and what she loves about Reigate.
What is KangaRocks and why did you set it up?
KangaRocks is a Babywearing Dance class. You wear your baby in a carrier or sling and your baby is your dance partner for the next 45 mins. It’s guilt free fun time for you as your baby is still with you. The best way to explain is to watch videos of the class (Video 1, Video 2, Video 3)
I started KangaRocks because: A - dance is in my blood and I missed dancing and music. I felt that just because I'd had a baby, it didn't mean I had to give it up. B - I tried classes where you all put the babies in the centre and exercise around them, but my little girl just wanted to be held all the time. I felt frustrated that I couldn't do anything with my baby… SO KangaRocks was born. I could wear my baby and dance at the same time. She loved being close to me, the rocking motions from the gentle movements and the music. I loved the energy boost, the mood lift and moving around not feeling guilty as my baby was still with me ! Plus meeting all the new mums in class was fantastic and boy do we have a giggle!!!
What would your best piece of advice be to a new parent?
People want to give advice to you constantly as a new parent! Don’t stress yourself out with what people say is right and wrong! Your way is the right way and every baby is different .
How long have you lived/worked in Reigate?
I’ve lived in Reigate for 31 years, born and bred, although I have traveled the world dancing professionally on cruise ships I always wanted to come back home to Reigate. It’s just home and there's no place like home.
What is your favourite thing(s) about Reigate?
I love Reigate Priory park and it was always one of my favourite places to go as a child. I especially love the lake, perhaps because when I was around 3 years old I fell in the water whilst trying to feed the ducks! My poor parents had to put me in the car sopping wet.
I also love the Castle grounds as it's just so pretty and I have wonderful memories of my nan's cottage there.
Reigate is a wonderful place to grow up, especially now with all the tea rooms, parks, shops and a real community spirit.
Our site is all about helping families build a community. Do you feel that Reigate has a strong sense of community?
Absolutely !! Like I said in my last answer that's one of my favourite things about Reigate. When you go to the park there are always other mums and dads willing to have a friendly chat with a stranger or help each other out. I find now from going to baby groups such as KangaRocks that I have made so many more friends and often see people about in Reigate that I say hello to.
Where do you head to at the weekend, or if you get an hour to yourself?
As a family we spend a lot of time at Priory Park with my daughter on the scooter or in Pistachios. We also love visiting local farms. If I get an hour to myself I’d love to say it would be at Dove Spa as I love it there, but its more likely to be doing the weekly food shop! Haha
Finally, where can people go to find out more information?
We hold weekly classes and one off events. We also offer a private KangaRocks class if you and your baby group would like a private class. Classes are being added all the time so do keep an eye out.
